Marmaris to Marti Keci Buku, 3 August to !9 August

View Marmaris to Keci Buku and back in a larger map

Rant number 4, and I feel most remiss once again.  This year ‘holiday’ has really meant holiday and my vital signs of life seem to have rather limped out, and my readiness to provide rants is lacking.  Actually I have just been for a big snorkel, in Turkey they take great pride in keeping their waters clean, and perhaps the odd little tuffet of (hard to describe) standing uppy sort of yellowy things means life is returning to the sea floor, but when I saw some little fish I stopped to study them, (it is always so much fun to watch a fish in the water, because they somehow think we are fish floundering and show little fear) and I can tell you I didn’t stop very often.  We saw a seagull and Joe thought it looked a bit lonely.

Well back to the start, Marmaris.  After leaving Deep Bay we had a bit of a sail, and a smooth run to Marmaris, stopped a night at Netsel Marina, in the big smoke of Marmaris, where we had a most unlikely thunderstorm, more huff and puff than anything, certainly very angry sounding heavens we actually enjoyed 30 minutes of something resembling precipitation.  Always thought we would like to have a night at Netsel, meal at Pineapple, and now we have done it, that’s enough now, Bar Street goes off ALL night.

We just could not believe when we went over to Yot Marine for a night to confirm things, that they were full inside.  They put us on the outside with others who missed out like us, it is not a nice feeling, in the night it got quite wavey, but we survived.

So off we set on our Western leg, to Serci Limani, to Nimos.  He remembered us from last year, but sadly the little girl, (niece) was not there this year.  We were treated to entertainment by the way of ?????????? who both are in a band, The Last of the Wild, and tonight we were the audience, lucky us.

We had a couple of nights at Kizil Adasi, I will borrow the extract I wrote to our sailing friends from home

you just won't believe what we have just had to witness.  When we came into this little bay Kisil Adasi, out of Bozburun yesterday it was hard to find a parking space, we found a gap between a big launch and a HUGE gullet, it was tricky conditions to anchor stern to, with a 15 knot breeze from aft and starboard.  Joe always insists, and rightly so, that the anchor well is empty, all 80 metres of our 10 ml chain, but estimating that exact distance is the bit we haven't quite perfected yet, we dropped where we thought correct, in 35 metres of water, and sadly the chain stopped about 30 meters short of the shore, so off my speedy swimmer went with the full length of the stern line to swim with, so even though I was driving the engine back at 2400 revs, I was still swinging over to the goggly eyed patrons on the gullet, peering down at me in bewilderment.  I put the dingy in between and they fended off our solar goalposts.  Well the thing is, this morning the surrounding boats left, and we had a big gap all around.  We were just thinking of opening the bar at 2pm for our obligatory lunch time beer, when havoc set loose, a 20 odd ton cat came in, let out his chain of barely a boat length, in about 25 metres, and tied to the tree, but of course he dragged.  The smart person would pull in the aft lines and re anchor, learning their lesson hopefully.  But not in his case, he just let out more line and hovered about, still attached to the tree, how not getting the line under the prop or drifting onto rocks is unbelievable.  We were starting to get sooo nervous, nothing more scary that someone who doesn't have any clue at all.  Meanwhile a near new Oceans 46 started attacking from the other side.  They came into the shore and hovered about, I was thinking that thank god, we have a thinking skipper on the other side, he is just checking out the sea bed etc, but how wrong could we be, a German crew started taking their line ashore, Joe wondered if they had forgotten to put their anchor out, I called to the skipper with a brand new skipper's hat on, "you need to put your anchor out"  "Oh, do you think so?" came the genuine reply.  A boat on the other side meanwhile had jumped in the water and took their aft line and gave some instructions, but not enough, they still had only 1 or 2 boat length of chain out.  When they were as settled as they are likely to be, he turned to us and thanked us.  It is just totally unbelievable some of the antics we have to be amongst here, and that is the very reason why we quite often tie to a restaurant jetty or buoys, we are largely away from dangers of others there.  It is just incomprehensible to us that they let people away with an almost brand new boat with such little knowledge of how to manage them.  Not sure about the cat, he had either won it in a lottery, or bought it to impress his little fluzey he has on board with him.  There won't be any time for any of those activities for them, because he was constantly up and down to check the anchor.  It was blowing 15 knots, and we were in 20 metres here so the cat would actually have dropped in about 25 metres, would be lucky to have 25 metres out.

So after they all left us in our peace, we enjoyed a pleasant evening, in the night the meltimi wind swept in about 30 knots, so we were thankful our neighbors with their pocket handkerchief of anchor out had moved on.

From there we went to Captains Table at Soyut, Sali and his Dutch wife were very welcoming, and we started to have a walk up the hill to the village.  A dolmus stopped and gave us a ride part way, we seemed to be going for ages, and decided that the hot walk might be getting too long, so we got him to stop in the middle of the countryside.  The roadsides here were pretty scruffy really, but it was nice to get away from the water.

We were still going against the wind, not that there was much of it, but it was a motor around to Selimye.  We hitched up to the Aurora quay, Huseyin was as large as life and a huge entertainer.  It was a nice stay and lovely swimming, and when we left Huseyin gave such a send off, he came out with his loud hailer and iphone, and played the NZ national anthem and calling out bye bye kiwis.  Then the bell tolled.   We had a few nights out on anchor, Bencik was a beautiful long bay like a Fiord which at the end quite alone sat a deck with lots of lounge chairs, and nobody on them, but suddenly when we went for a little dinghy ride at 5pm, they were all filled up with people, from where they hailed we would not know.  One thing we have noticed is that suddenly it has cooled off a bit, and the water temperature has dropped to 31, so it is much more refreshing to have a swim.

A couple of nights around Marti, and here we exercised the black water pump out, this was quite a new experience.  We had been told that if we don’t have a couple of empty outs on our blue card, then they might reneg our transit log next year, which we don’t entirely believe, but it seemed small inconvenience to take advantage of their facilities while we were filling with diesel, it was free and not such a taxing experience.  While on the quay there we met Alex, another kiwi who is sailing with his wife Ruth for 5 months a year, and he told us of the most horrific event he has ever endured in Vliho in the Ionian of Greece last September in Vliho, a normally rock solid bay in the event of a storm, it is actually nicknamed Velcro bay because it is so safe, and in fact there was a big storm forecast so there were lots of boats hunkering down here for that reason, when the unspeakable happened, a tornedo, or water spout hit, Alex and Ruth were flattened sideways twice, a catermaran was flipped end for end, and ended upside down in the water.

If you click on these links you can get a bit of a view of the destruction this tornedo caused http://youtu.be/ndg80ZN0D94  and http://youtu.be/ctaHjwwrbRM

We had another couple of lovely nights at anchor, one swinging in Kululubuku, with only one other launch in the bay, and now we are sitting in Sailors Paradise it is truly paradise, we are backed up to within12 meters to the shore, the water is like crystal, unbelievably turquoise and clear, but we must have a swim and get along, get some sails up before the rugby game starts, NZ v Aus, in Sydney.  If we don’t have the sails up before kickoff, then the game won’t be permitted to be interrupted to get the sails up.

Well we have arrived at Bozburun, there was no need to worry about sailing interrupting the rugby, it was glass flat with 1 knot of wind, and we made it to the Bozburun Yacht club in time for the rugby.  We picked up their buoy, it turned out to be an expensive buoy, the meal was pretty expensive, so we will head into the town and throw the anchor our tonight.  We only have another week with Wrighteau, before flying off to Istanbul and then Portugal for a couple of weeks, so we will be home soon.

Until next time Goligula from Turkey
